TL;DR
A rash on the hairline can be caused by head lice, contact dermatitis, eczema, or product buildup. Check for lice first with a wet comb — it's the most common cause in children.
Check for lice
Head lice often cause redness and irritation along the hairline, especially behind the ears and at the nape. Use conditioner and a fine comb to check. Wipe the comb on a tissue and look for lice or eggs.
How to check for lice
Wash and condition hair, leave it damp, then comb from roots to ends in small sections. Good lighting helps. If you find live lice, treat with a silicone- or oil-based product and repeat after 7–10 days. Snap a photo and try our checker for an indicative result. Stubborn case? Find a clinic.
