Privacy & trust

How we use images

When you upload a photo, we know you're trusting us with something personal — often a picture of your child. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.

The most important thing to know: if you scan privately, your image is not retained for training. Training retention only happens when you choose that path and confirm consent before scanning.

Private by default

Scan privately and your image is analysed for your result only — not kept for training.

Personal details removed

Hidden photo data (EXIF), like location, is stripped before anything is stored for training.

  1. 1

    You upload a photo

Sent securely to run the scan.

  2. 2

    You choose how to scan

Scan privately, or opt in to help improve detection.

  3. 3

    We scan it

The AI analyses the image using the same process either way.

  4. 4

    You get a result

    Shown instantly on screen.

  5. 5

    Optional retention

Only on the contribution path, after explicit pre-scan consent.

  6. 6

    Secure storage

Only if you opted in. Encrypted, access-limited.

  7. 7

    Human review

A trained reviewer checks the image.

  8. 8

    Annotation

Lice and nits are carefully labelled.

  9. 9

    Dataset

Added to a curated training set.

  10. 10

    Future model

Used to train a better version.

  11. 11

    Better scans

    More accurate results for everyone.

To perform your scan (required)

To give you a result at all, we need to process the image you upload. This is the one thing we can't avoid — without it, there's no scan.

This processing is only used to produce your result. It is not the same as keeping your image for AI training.

To improve future AI (optional)

Before scanning, you can choose to help improve detection. This is a separate, explicit decision from your scan result.

If you scan privately, nothing is retained for training. If you choose the contribution path, you must confirm consent before the scan runs.

What we remove before storing

  • Hidden metadata (EXIF), including GPS location and device details, is stripped.
  • We don't ask for names, and images aren't linked to your identity.
  • Images are never shown publicly or sold.

You can change your mind

If you opted in and later change your mind, visit the Privacy Centre to withdraw consent. Your image is then flagged, excluded from future training, and scheduled for deletion.
