TL;DR
Nits are head louse eggs: oval, yellowish-white, glued near the scalp. They hatch in 7–10 days. Remove with a fine comb; treat with silicone- or oil-based products. Dead nits may stay attached but won't hatch.
How can you tell if you have nits?
Nits are small, oval, and firmly attached to hair shafts. They're often behind the ears or at the nape. They don't brush off like dandruff. Use a fine comb and good light to spot them.
Can you check or pull out nits with your fingers?
Fingers can't reliably remove nits — they're glued on. Use a fine metal comb. Comb daily after treatment. Vinegar or nit-removal solutions can loosen the glue. Not sure? Check first. For hands-on help, find a clinic near you.
